Fly Facts
Horse and deer flies cause extensive damage to equine and livestock owners across
the country.Over 300 types of horse flys have been identified in the USA.
Female horse and deer flies are viscous
biters; the buzzing sound and the painful
wounds can stop livestock from grazing
and can cause them to move together
for protection from the flies. In this
clustering together livestock can injure one another or themselves.
The flies can create as much as 20-30% drop in milk production in cows, and weight
loss in livestock; as much as 100 pounds per animal per season. Flies can also create
significant blood loss in livestock; in 6 hours just 20-30 flies can be responsible for the
loss of as much as a third of a pint to a third of a quart of blood in one animal.
The flies feed intermittently, making them efficient carriers of pathogens including
anaplasmosis, anthrax, tularemia and other blood borne illnesses. This intermittent
pattern of feeding can create a rapid spread of illness from one animal to another.
Fly damage to livestock includes blood loss, weight loss, decline in milk production
and the infestation of pathogenic disease.
Anaplasmosis, anthrax, tularemia and other blood borne illnesses are all easily spread
by flies. Deer and horse flies are also suspected of transmitting Lyme disease according
to the New England Journal of Medicine (1990). Biting deer flies can also attach
people causing illness, lesions and in some people high fever and general disability.
Since flies feed intermittently the movement from sick animals to healthy animals can
quickly spread the infestation quickly through the herd.
Pink eye in the bovine population can be spread from face flies through the
transmission of Moraxella Bovis, the principle causation of bovine keratoconjunctivitis
and the more severe infectious bovine rhinotracheitis which can be more dangerous
to the herd.
Tularemia, a zoonotic disease is caused by coccobacillus Francisella tularensis known
as “rabbit fever” or “deer fly fever” and is known to be spread from deer fly bite.

Traditional Pest Management
Flies have flight patterns which allow them to travel significant distances from the application of pesticide site.
Traditional pesticides can not be used in feeding or breeding area as they are toxic to the animals.
The use of pesticides in crop areas can impact soil quality, ground water and other
agricultural commodities.
